'US Killed British Journalist'. On Accident. After The Iraqis Had Already Shot Him. While He Rode In An Enemy Get Away Car.

So Yahoo has an extremely biased story, "Coroner: U.S. killed British TV reporter." The story tells of the US killing the journalist, Terry Lloyd, quotes the coroner as saying it couldn't have been an accident, and quotes his widow as saying it was a war crime. The story, however, says this:

The coroner said Friday that a civilian drove up in a minivan, pulled a U-turn and picked up four wounded Iraqi soldiers, then saw Lloyd with a press card around his neck and helped him into the van. Lloyd was shot in the head as the van drove off toward a hospital, the coroner said.

So the US opens fire on Iraqi troops. A "civilian" picks up the troops, and, for some reason, also gets Lloyd. The US fires on the ambulance that was, in effect, making a get away with the enemy. They had no way to know that Llyod (who, by the way, was wounded by the Iraqis in the first place) was on the "ambulance."

This sounds in every way to have been an accident, and in every way a plausible one. A British journalist put himself in the line of fire; he knew the dangers in being there. Unfortunately, after being shot in the back by the Iraqis, a van full of wounded enemies chose to pick him up before trying to make a get away. The US stopped the van using force, and in the process accidentally killed Llyod. Sad? Yes. Accident? Yes. War crime? Absolutely not.
