'People Don't Stop Killers. People With Guns Do.'

I'm too disgusted by all of the anti-Second Amendment filth being spewed in response to the VTech killings to post any of it, but since you'll be getting a good helping of it anyway from the MSM, here's Glenn Reynold's take on gun bans on campuses: "People Don't Stop Killers. People With Guns Do."

Blame-Game Begins In VTech Killings

The blame-game in the VTech killings has begun... Guh...

Liberal "heroes" like Olberman are blaming Bush for allowing the Assault Weapons Law of 1994 to expire therefore allowing Cho Seung-Hui to buy extended clips, when the ban didn't even cover them!

Meanwhile, some psycho over at Huffington Post is saying "I think it is also fair to place some of the blame on our political leaders who called for us to invade and occupy Iraq."

Guh. Get a grip on reality. There's one person to blame in this: the killer! He was a disturbed psycho who couldn't deal with his problems. Did a few extra bullets per clip allow him to kill all those people? I don't think so.

I don't want to argue the Second Amendment with regards to something so tragic, but let's be honest; the kid was already breaking gun laws by having a firearm on campus. Is anyone surprised the mass murder chose not to obey the law? If anything, greater Second Amendment rights may have saved lives, someone on campus may have been able to shoot back! Remember: when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

Second Amendment Gets A Win In DC

A rare win for the Second Amendment in DC, from WaPo:

A federal appellate panel today struck down parts of [Washington, DC]'s gun law as unconstitutional, ruling that the city cannot bar people from keeping firearms in their homes.

The decision was a victory for six D.C. residents who said they wanted to keep firearms for self-defense. But it could have much broader implications: The case eventually could wind up before the U.S. Supreme Court as a test of the thorny issues surrounding the Second Amendment and the public's right to keep weapons.

How any politician could think it was constitutional to ban people from having guns in their own homes is beyond me, but then again, liberals just pick and choose which parts of the Constitution they think are still relevant.

'Janie's Got A Gun'

This week's conservative song is "Janie's Got A Gun" by Aerosmith. About how the Second Amendment is the great equalizer, especially for women, this song tells us about an abused girl killing her father when no one would help her. (Note to liberals: give women guns and we won't have to worry about your unrealistic "incest/rape" pregnancies that aparently happen so much, requiring abortions). Here's the song:

Here're the lyrics:

Dum, dum, dum, honey what have you done?
Dum, dum, dum it's the sound of my gun.
Dum, dum, dum, honey what have you done?
Dum, dum, dum it's the sound

Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her whole world's come undone
From lookin' straight at the sun
What did her daddy do?
What did he put you through?
They said when Janie was arrested they found him underneath a train
But man, he had it comin' Now that Janie's got a gun she ain't never gonna be the same.

Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
Tell me now it's untrue.
What did her daddy do?
He jacked a little bitty baby
The man has got to be insane
They say the spell that he was under the lightning and the thunder knew that someone had to stop the rain

Run away, run away from the pain yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Run away run away from the pain yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away

Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
What did her daddy do?
It's Janie's last I.O.U.
She had to take him down easy and put a bullet in his brain
She said 'cause nobody believes me. The man was such a sleeze. He ain't never gonna be the same.

Run away, run away from the pain yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah
Run away run away from the pain yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away

Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Everybody is on the run

Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
Because Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
Janie's got a gun

New Assault Weapons Ban Before The House Judiciary Committee

A new bill, HR 1022, the "Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007," is set to go before the House Judiciary Committee. It's sponsor is Rep. Carolyn McCarthy [D-NY]. Some highlights of the bill include:

  • Instead of banning rifles with 2 evil features, it’s one evil feature. Said evil features are:

    `(i) a folding or telescoping stock;

    `(ii) a threaded barrel;

    `(iii) a pistol grip;

    `(iv) a forward grip; or

    `(v) a barrel shroud.

  • Expands the list of rifles banned specifically by name.
  • Bans possession of conversion kits (example, you couldn’t own a rifle and a bayonet lug even if the two weren’t attached).
  • Transfer of grandfathered weapons would have to go through a FFL.
  • Bans transfers of grandfathered semi-automatics with regular capacity magazines.
  • This bill is particularly ugly, folks.

Update: Seems the ban on transfer provision is there to prevent people like my from going out and stocking up on evil black rifles. This happened quite extensively prior to passage of the 1994 ban. Manufacturers cranked out weapons that look like assault weapons and regular capacity magazines in droves. People bought them up and some turned a profit. I personally sold an Oly Arms AR for $1,300 after spending $700 on it two months before.

Update 2: Make sure you write or call your Congressmonkeies and tell them oppose this bill.

Yet another bill that aims to protect law enforcement, how? By banning certain guns based on their aesthetic features? Shows you how much liberals know about guns.

    **Update, 5:55pm***

Here's my letter to my Congressman, if you want/need to steal ideas:
    Representative Upton,

I would be lying if I said you didn't let me down in your recent vote to condemn the administrations planned "troop surge" in Iraq. But that is behind us now, and I'm am writing you in concern to a completely different issue.

From what I've been told, H.R. 1022, "the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007," is now before the House Judiciary Committee. I beg you to do everything in your power to defeat this bill.

This is classic liberal scaremongering; nothing good will come out of banning guns based solely on their aesthetic qualities. I would remind you that Michigan is state where we understand our rights and have a particular affinity with the Second Amendment. Every American has the right to bear arms, no matter if those arms have a "pistol grip," a "barrel shroud," a "forward grip," or any other merely aesthetic feature.

Once again, I'm urging you not to be part of this liberal assault on the rights of Americans. We need every conservative member of Congress to stand up and show that they won't break under the pressure of liberal scaremongering. Please, do what is right and fight to defeat H.R. 1022.
And even though I linked to it up there in the block quote, here's where you can contact your Congressman electronically (here for snail mail, or by phone).

In Search of The Second Amendment

Vent with Michelle Malkin is pluging a movie today called, "In Search of The Second Amendment." It looks pretty good, not that the trailor is that revealing, but I like the music and quotes:

Be sure to head over to their site and buy the movie.

The Best Defense Is A Good Gun

Remember, the best self-defense is owning and knowing how to use a gun:

    NYT Opinion By Glen Reynolds

On the plus side the NYT somehow let an opinion piece by Glen Reynolds of Instapundit through their filter ("What? We published an article that doesn't endanger American troops or call for the execution of Bush? What were we thinking?") :

    A Rifle in Every Pot

    Knoxville, Tenn.

IT’S a phenomenon that gives the term “gun control” a whole new meaning: community ordinances that encourage citizens to own guns.

Last month, Greenleaf, Idaho, adopted Ordinance 208, calling for its citizens to own guns and keep them ready in their homes in case of emergency. It’s not a response to high crime rates. As The Associated Press reported, “Greenleaf doesn’t really have crime ... the most violent offense reported in the past two years was a fist fight.” Rather, it’s a statement about preparedness in the event of an emergency, and an effort to promote a culture of self-reliance.

And it may not be a bad idea. While pro-gun laws like the one in Greenleaf are mostly symbolic, to the extent that they actually make a difference, it is likely to be a positive one.

Greenleaf is following in the footsteps of Kennesaw, Ga., which in 1982 passed a mandatory gun ownership law in response to a handgun ban passed in Morton Grove, Ill. Kennesaw’s crime dropped sharply, while Morton Grove’s did not.

To some degree, this is rational. Criminals, unsurprisingly, would rather break into a house where they aren’t at risk of being shot. As David Kopel noted in a 2001 article in The Arizona Law Review, burglars report that they try to avoid homes where armed residents are likely to be present. We see this phenomenon internationally, too, with the United States having a lower proportion of “hot” burglaries — break-ins where the burglars know the home to be occupied — than countries with restrictive gun laws.

Be sure to read the rest here.

Ultramontane, 4:23: This reminds me of a clip from John Stossel's Myths, Lies and Straight Talk that I watched last night in which he interviews felons who tell him that they're not afraid of the police or guard dogs or anything as much as they're afraid of people who own guns. He also mentions that guns are used two to three times more for defensive purposes as they are to commit crimes!

City Ordinance Requests All Homes Own A Gun To Deter Crime

Alphecca has this story (hat tip: Instapundit) about an Idaho city that has passed an ordinance that "requested (but did not require) all residents to keep a gun in their homes for protection and to deter crime."

Apparently the town was inspired by the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.
